This behaviour is currently by design. For a particularly long route you do need to explicitly click the "fit" button before it will be shrunk to fit.

Shame,
but on the perhaps erroneous assumption that it is a simple thing to change, could the abeam clearance minimum be changed to Zero?
While banging on about the en route features display there is a slightly irritating feature. I often set the display to show the whole route. If I then make a change to the route on the chart the display then reverts to what seems to be its default setting showing only the first part of the route. This means that when making multiple changes I am frequently having to change the display to show the bit of the route I am interested in. Would it be possible to make the display revert to whatever it was showing prior to making the change?

Would it be possible to add a control for the "abeam terrain clearance function" to the enroute features display and allow the minimum to be zero. The purpose of this is to show the terrain profile directly below the flightpath which would be very useful in determining a safe altitude to fly along a valley.
Also, could there be an option to show a shaded area on the the chart between the route line and any terrain that is closer than what is set for abeam terrain clearance(ABT). When ABT is set to your aircraft's turn radius plus a safety margin this would highlight any points where a valley is too narrow to make a 180 deg turn.
